Democrat Representative Says He Won’t Certify Results If Trump Wins

(Cupventi.com) – House Oversight Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, called out Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, labeling him “the ultimate hypocrite” in response to Raskin’s hesitation to fully commit to certifying a potential 2024 presidential win for Donald Trump. Comer accused Raskin of undermining democracy despite frequently claiming to defend it.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Comer said, “Ranking member Raskin is the ultimate hypocrite. He talks a big game about ‘saving democracy’ yet actively undermines it by sowing seeds of doubt in America’s free and fair elections when it benefits him to do so.” He further described Raskin as a “two-time election denier,” citing Raskin’s stance on the 2000 election and his refusal to certify Trump’s 2016 victory. Comer also criticized Raskin for suggesting he would take similar actions if Trump won again in 2024, saying, “Raskin doesn’t care at all about democracy. He only cares about putting a Democrat in the White House whatever the cost.”

Raskin, a former member of the January 6 Committee, responded to Comer’s comments during an interview with Axios, where he expressed a conditional acceptance of a Trump victory. He stated that he would accept the outcome if Trump won a “free, fair and honest election.” However, he doubted Trump’s ability to do so, accusing the former president of manipulating election processes. Raskin specifically referenced Trump’s actions in Nebraska and Georgia, where he claimed Trump tried to manipulate vote counts and electoral processes.

Several other Democratic representatives echoed Raskin’s concerns. Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky and Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern voiced their skepticism about Trump’s intentions. McGovern, speaking to Axios, mentioned that Democrats would certify a Trump victory, but only if “everything goes the way we expect it to.”

Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York called out the Democrats, accusing them of hypocrisy. She said, “After years of the radical left’s stenographers in the mainstream media, corporate special interest groups, and radical Democrats viciously smearing President Trump and Republicans for standing up for election integrity, now 24 days until Election Day, far-left Democrats are claiming that a President Trump victory would be illegitimate.”

Raskin countered these accusations by stating that the Democratic Party values democracy and the rule of law. He accused Trump and his followers of trying to seize power through “fraud, deceit, lies, coercion, trickery, voter suppression, and mass insurrectionary violence,” and vowed never to stop defending American constitutional democracy against these tactics.

Election certification has become a contentious issue in the lead-up to the 2024 election. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson faced criticism from top Democrats after being questioned on whether he would certify election results if Kamala Harris were to win the presidency. Johnson confirmed that he would, provided the election was “free, fair, and safe.”

The issue was further spotlighted during a recent vice-presidential debate, where Ohio Senator JD Vance was pressed on his previous statements about not certifying the 2020 election results. Vance argued that the real threat to democracy is censorship, not Trump. Meanwhile, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized Trump and Republicans for their continued denial of the January 6 Capitol attack.
