7 People Believed Dead After Bridge Collapses In Georgia

(Cupventi.com) – A tragic marina collapse on Sapelo Island, Georgia, has left seven people feared dead, with over 20 others thrown into the water when a gangway gave way on Saturday afternoon. The incident, which occurred just before 4:30 p.m., triggered a massive search and rescue response involving the U.S. Coast Guard and state and local agencies.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said that emergency personnel, including boats equipped with side-scan sonar and helicopters, were immediately deployed to the scene to aid in search and rescue efforts. The number of injured individuals remains uncertain as officials continue to assess the situation. “The gangway has been secured on Sapelo Island and the incident is currently under investigation,” the DNR noted in a statement.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his sorrow over the tragic event. In a statement, he said, “We are heartbroken by today’s tragedy on Sapelo Island. As state and local first responders continue to work this active scene, we ask that all Georgians join us in praying for those lost, for those still in harm’s way, and for their families.”

The McIntosh County Office of the Sheriff urged those concerned about loved ones on the island to check in with a reunification center established at Elm Grove Baptist Church in Meridian, the nearest town to the island. Authorities emphasized their focus on ensuring everyone is accounted for while rescue teams continue their work.

The gangway, which is typically used by public ferry vessels, the University of Georgia’s research trawler, and some small boats, collapsed during an event that brought numerous people to Sapelo Island. The Sepalo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society was holding its annual Cultural Day celebration on the island, which is considered one of its most prominent events. It remains unclear whether those on the gangway were part of the celebration.

Sapelo Island, known for its scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage, is located about 72 miles south of Savannah on Georgia’s Atlantic Coast. The small island is a cherished location that draws researchers and visitors alike. This weekend’s gathering was meant to celebrate the island’s vibrant culture, but instead, it has ended in sorrow and tragedy. Local authorities and investigators will continue working to determine what caused the structure to collapse as the community mourns this heartbreaking loss.
