The student, identified as 20-year-old Johnny Roop, was reported missing after he was last seen at his living quarters within the Merrimac area, as confirmed by officials from Virginia Tech.

The situation grew more concerning when Roop failed to arrive at his family’s residence in Abingdon, located approximately 100 miles southwest of Merrimac, where he was scheduled to undertake an online examination by 5 p.m. The absence of his presence prompted concerns, as highlighted by statements from the institution.

Adding to the urgency of the search, it was revealed that Roop’s cellphone signal was detected near the New River Valley Mall, situated to the south of Merrimac, at precisely 4:26 p.m. on the day of his disappearance. The details surrounding his last known whereabouts have become a critical piece of information in the ongoing search efforts.

Roop was known to be driving a black 2018 Toyota Camry, identified by its Virginia license plate number TXW6643. Descriptions provided of Roop depict him as being 6 feet, 3 inches in height, with distinguishing blonde hair and hazel eyes, which could aid in his identification.
